Trinity Church in Newport, Rhode Island was founded in 1698, and this rich tradition is being brought into the 21st Century by its pioneering pastor and a team of technology and marketing volunteers. According to Trinity’s rector, The Rev. Canon Anne Marie Richards, “We’re heading into the future, clicking and praying all the way.”
The centerpiece of this thoroughly modern outreach is a new web site which went live on March 31st. The new site, http://www.TrinityNewport.org features an up-to-date activities listing, program details, archived sermons, some great old photographs and many other state of the art functions. Among these are social media links to Facebook and Twitter.
“What we have created with this new undertaking,” continues Rev. Richards, “is a pathway for members of our community, wherever they may be on life’s journey, to keep in touch with the exciting and dynamic life of our parish.”
The iconic Trinity building, based on a design by Christopher Wren, was constructed in 1726. Its delicate spire dominates Queen Anne Square in the heart of Newport, overlooking the harbor. “We have a prominent place in Newport – literally and figuratively – and this new outreach will enable us to reach even farther” states the Rector.
The vibrant Episcopal community has been searching for additional ways to engage current and past members, as well as the community at large. This was modeled by recruiting a high tech intern who worked remotely. “Trinity’s active web and social media presence helps the church connect with today’s digital generation,” said Antonia Noori Farzan. “The new website is informative and welcoming for visitors and newcomers alike.”
Rev. Richards added, “When you consider the role that our church has played over 300 years of its presence in Newport – the presidents, the royalty and the many dignitaries who have shared this spiritual space, we are excited and humbled to extend our reach to cyber space.”
